Rosario can be rightly proud of a gritty performance against championship side Newington at Ulidia today in Round 3 of the Intermediate Cup.

The Roses pushed their senior opposition all the way before finally succumbing to three late extra time goals.

Ulidia is not an easy place for any opposition to play and so it proved again today as Rosario battled and harried Newington during a fairly rambunctious 90 minutes.

Newington peppered the home defence but found keeper Seamus McFlynn in top form. However, the home keeper could do nothing to stop Newington’s centre forward heading the visitors in front 6 minutes into the first period of extra time.

Two more late goals followed from Newington. Pearse McVarnock’s superb curling drive had given Rosario brief hope of forcing the game to penalties but it wasn’t to be.

It’s back to league action next weekend at Ulidia as Rosario entertain Ballynahinch United.
